Dr. David J. Stephens

Dr. David J. Stephens is the Regional Mental Health Director for CHM. Dr. Stephens will support CHM’s comprehensive and extensive behavioral health capabilities to include substance abuse treatment methodologies.

He is proud to rejoin the CHM team after working for the Colorado Department of Corrections the past year and a half. Prior to rejoining CHM, Dr. Stephens was Chief of Behavioral Health Services for the Colorado Department of Corrections. He also served as Regional Mental Health Director for the state of Missouri where he oversaw all aspects of mental health services for the state’s Correctional Medical Services contract, as Mental Health Consultant with both the Idaho Department of Corrections and the Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque and as Regional Mental Health Director for the state of Wyoming.

Dr. Stephens began his clinical career in the early 1990’s, building a successful private practice in the Denver area. From there he continued to practice psychology by serving dually-diagnosed patients with the Pueblo Circle Program at the Colorado Mental Health Institute.

Dr. Stephens is a member of the American Psychological Association and is a licensed psychologist in Missouri, Wyoming, Colorado and Kansas. In addition to presenting many papers on mental health and co-occurring disorder issues, Dr. Stephens has authored a chapter in the 1992 book “Broken Dreams: A Clergy Manual for Dealing with Domestic Violence” and a chapter in the upcoming book, “Correctional Mental Health:  From Theory to Best Practice”.

Dr. Stephens earned his doctorate of psychology from the University of Denver, his master’s degree from the Denver Seminary and his bachelor’s degree in psychology from John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.
